The date of sowing tomatoes is just around. This is how you will prepare seedlings

One of the most important steps in the cultivation of tomatoes is to choose the right seed sowing date. Tomatoes are thermophilic plants, which in Poland are most often grown from seedlings. This means that seeds are sown in a room or greenhouse a few weeks before planned transplantation to the ground or a plastic tunnel. Between sowing cuttings and moving them to the target place It usually goes from 6 to 8 weeks.

Therefore, the first date worth considering is mid -February/beginning of March – the right time for greenhouse varieties. The cultivation intended for the plastic tunnel should start in March, and at the latest, because the beginning of April comes time for ground tomatoes.

In the Polish climate you can grow many varieties of tomatoes, so it’s worth considering what they will be best for our needs. If you plan to grow in the ground, plastic tunnel or greenhouse, choose seeds adapted to such conditions.

It’s best to choose seeds from proven Polish producers that are adapted to local climatic conditions. It is also worth focusing on disease -resistant varieties, especially if you plan ecological cultivation, without the use of chemical plant protection products.

  • Preparation of containers – select pots, boxes or multi -lamps with drainage holes. Thanks to this, you will avoid water retention, which can lead to rotting of seeds.
  • Selection of substrate – it works best light, permeable substrate For sowing vegetables. You can use a special soil for tomatoes or prepare your own mixture from garden soil, peat and sand.
  • Seed sowing – tomato seeds sown to a depth of about 0.5-1 cm. Lightly cover them with soil and gently pour them, preferably with a washer.
  • Ensuring adequate conditions – a pot with seeds is best placed in place at 20-25 ° C. Under these conditions, the seeds germinate after 7-14 days.

After germination of seeds, move the plants to a bright place, preferably to the southern window sill or to the greenhouse. Tomatoes need a lot of light, so with cloudy days it is worth illuminating them.

  • – Regular but moderate. The soil should be moist, but not wet.
  • Quilting – when cuttings have 2-3 appropriate leaves, it is worth drinking them to larger containers. This will strengthen the root system.
  • Fertilization – gentle fertilization, preferably with tomato fertilizer or a universal fertilizer for vegetables.

Usually a week before the planned blowing of tomatoes to the ground, you should start hardening. What is it about? For getting used to light and lower temperatures. Do it gradually, displaying pots for a few hours a day outside, over time extending this period. Observe the weather conditions – the transfer to the ground should occur when there is no more frosts and temperature at night does not fall below 10 ° C. The soil in the destination should be fertile, while the entire position sheltered from the wind.

The spacing between the cuttings is still important – it’s best to keep distance about 50-60 cm between plants and 70-80 cm between rows. Also take care of the support of plants, i.e. provide them with supports to which you will attach shoots.
