The auditorium of the Tavira Municipal Library receives, next Saturday, March 1, at 6:30 pm, the last session of the “Conferences in Winter 2025 – History of the Algarve” cycle. The closing will be carried out by Aurélio Cabrita, who will present the lecture “The terrestrial accessibility to the Algarve and Tavira in the last 170 years”. Admission is free and the organization is in charge of Casa Álvaro de Campos.
Aurélio Cabrita’s communication will address the development of land transport infrastructures in the Algarve, from regeneration (1851) to the present. With the beginning of this period of political stability, the country attended an important investment in public works, highlighting the construction of macadamized roads and railways. The lecture will explore how these ways have shaped the Algarve and Tavira connection to the rest of the country over the last 170 years.
Aurélio Nuno Cabrita, born in São Bartolomeu de Messines, is a degree in Environment Engineering and Master in History of the Algarve. Currently, he is a columnist in the monthly “Terra Ruiva” and the digital newspaper “Sul Information”, as well as the author of various works, including: “The Proclamation of the Republic in the Algarve”, “The Mother Church of St. Bartolomeu de Messines” and “St. Bartolomeu de Messines and Silves, from the targets of liberalism to October 5, 1910”.
This session marks the closure of a cycle of lectures that was attended by Carlos Manuel Faísca, Marco Sousa Santos, Burigida Baptista and Aurélio Cabrita, bringing new perspectives on the history of the Algarve.
It emerged in 1987, inspired by the figure of the poet Álvaro de Campos, who was born in Tavira, on October 15, 1890 and has the support of the Tavira Chamber to perform his programming.
The Association boosts various cultural activities/events, paying special attention to the dissemination of the work of artists in the region. It has also edited some works on CD and book.
