Lula emphasized the urgency of health cooperation in the Global South, announcing the creation of a mechanism focused on the defense of world health

The president highlighted on Wednesday (26), during the first meeting of Sherpas of the Brazilian presidency, that the leadership of the country in the bloc will focus on the promotion of peace and the protection of the environment. “The BRICS will also continue to be a key piece for the ideals of the 2030 Agenda, the Paris Agreement and the future pact to be fulfilled. The Brazilian presidency will reinforce the vocation of the bloc as a space for diversity and dialogue for a multipolar world and less asymmetrical relationships, ”said the petista. According to him, the initiatives of the bloc seek to reduce inequalities in international relations, addressing issues that directly affect developing countries.

During his speech, Lula emphasized the urgency of health cooperation in the Global South, announcing the creation of a mechanism focused on the defense of world health. “Poverty, lack of access to basic services and social exclusion are the fertile ground for diseases such as tuberculosis, malaria and dengue and others that together threaten about 1 billion and 700 million people worldwide. During our presidency, we intend to launch a partnership for the elimination of socially determined diseases and neglected tropical diseases, ”he said. Another point addressed by the president was the proposal to use local currencies in financial transactions between the BRICS countries.

“The current protectionist climbing in the area of trade and investment reinforces the importance of measures that seek to overcome the obstacles to our economic integration. Increasing payment options means reducing vulnerabilities and costs. The Brazilian presidency is committed to the development of complementary, voluntary, affordable, transparent and secure payment platforms, ”he said. This measure aims to reduce trade and investment costs, facilitating economic integration between the block nations. In addition, Lula defended the need for equitable governance regarding artificial intelligence.

He suggested the elaboration of a statement by leaders who address the guidelines and responsibilities in the use of this emerging technology. “This technology cannot become a monopoly of few countries and few companies. Large corporations do not have the right to silence and destabilize whole nations with misinformation. Mitigating the risks and distributing the benefits of the digital revolution is a shared responsibility, ”said the president.

Discussions on these topics will be led by Sherpas, who are the negotiators of the BRICS countries. These conversations are preparatory to the leader summit, which is scheduled for July 6 and 7, in Rio de Janeiro, where the proposals will be debated at a higher level.
