The aim of introducing duties is to force countries to intervene against drug smuggling.
US President Donald Trump plans to introduce duties from Canada and Mexico and CLO of 10 % to import from China from Tuesday 4th March. This was stated on his social network Truth Social. TASR reports on this based on AP and AFP messages.
Trump on the social network wrote that illegal drugs such as Fentanyl are smuggled into the United States in quantities that are “unacceptable” and imports to import these countries to intervene against their smuggling.
“We cannot allow this disaster to continue to harm the US, and therefore, until it stops or seriously limits, the proposed duties to enter into force on March 4 will actually enter into force according to plan,” Trump wrote.
He canceled the initial duties
At the beginning of February, Trump first announced and then stopped the introduction of 25 % of Canada and Mexico’s imports for a month for not preventing illegal immigration and fentanyl smuggling into the US. The monthly pause ends on March 4.
Prospects for escalation of tariffs have already thrown a global economy into chaos and consumers express concerns about the deterioration of inflation. The automotive sector will suffer the most if they are imposed on imports from Mexico and Canada, the two largest US trading partners, imposed duties of 25 %.
But prospects for higher prices and slower economic growth could also be planted by Trump, AP notes.
The US President also noted that plans to impose “reciprocal duties” have remained valid since April. They want to charge to countries that have introduced duties from US imports in the interests of justice, at the same amount.
