Government signs Ordinance that defines emergency for burning

Text allows states, municipalities and the federal government to act on fire prevention actions

The Environment Minister, Marina Silva, signed on Thursday (27.FEV.2025) a decree that defines environmental emergency state in fire -risk areas. The ceremony was attended by the director of Ibama, Rodrigo Agostinho, and other environmental authorities.

According to Agostinho, the text allows states, municipalities and the federal government to act on fire prevention actions. Among the measures are the hiring of brigade members and the use of climate data to create more accurate preventive measures per region. So far the document has not been published in the DOU (Official Gazette).

“The idea is that there is an integrated strategy with environmental agencies. Ibama and ICMBio work in federal areas, but the fire has no owner ”said Augustine.

The ministry also announced that there will be a 25% increase in brigade members, totaling 4,000 professionals in the fight against fire.

Burning

The measure is trying to braintle the growth of devastation caused by fires in vegetation area. In 2024, the phenomenon was 79% higher compared to that recorded in 2023, totaling 30,867,676 hectares last year – an area larger than the entire territory of Italy.
