US law firms are contacting pockets to propose that they present testimonies against the minister () based on a law that punishes human rights violations.
The standard is known as Magnitsky Law, which refers to a Russian lawyer who died in a Moscow prison in 2012.
It allows the US government to adopt sanctions, including economic, against people who commit “great human rights violations internationally recognized.”
The framework of the STF minister in the criteria of the law has been defended by congressmen aligned with the US President ,.
One of them, republican deputy Rich McCormick of the state of Georgia, defended on Monday (24) that the judge is punished based on magnitsky.
According to him, “Moraes is a threat to the US, censoring American companies, suppressing freedom of expression and violating digital sovereignty. Its authoritarian tactics demand action.”
For Moraes to suffer punishments, which may include blockade of assets and bank accounts, there is a long way to go, however.
After an information collection process, in which the testimonies would be an important part, there would have to be a final report with recommendations of organs such as National Security Council and the Secretariats of State and Treasury. The law also asks that the president and leader of the Minority of the Foreign Affairs committees of Congress be heard.
The final decision would be Trump, who would need to take into account the diplomatic implications of punishment.
Moraes is the target of a judicial offensive in the US executed by trumpists. This Wednesday (26), a commission of the House of Representatives, such as revoking the visa of foreign authorities who violate freedom of expression. The measure was directed especially to the STF minister.
