Protesters and the Greek police clashed this Friday in Athens during the demonstration of the victims of the February 2023 railway accident that caused 57 dead, the Greek media released. The dimension of violence is very evident in the video associated with the article.

According to Greek state television ERT, Pedras and Cocktails Molotov were thrown at the Antimotim Police, who responded with tear gas, when about 200,000 people gathered around the Parliament building in downtown Athens to honor the 57 victims of the tragedy.

At least one person was taken by paramedics away from the disorders, according to the Associated Press (AP) news agency, noting that more than 5,000 police were mobilized in the capital to control crowds and clashes.

There are no official numbers yet, but sources of the proto newspaper Thema point to 84 police interpeairs, of which 41 resulted in arrests.

About 300,000 Greeks participated in a general strike and demonstrations in memory of the 57 killed in the February 28, 2023 rail disaster. In Athens, about 200,000 protesters gathered in front of Parliament to demand answers to the exact causes of this accident that became a “collective trauma,” according to Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

Amid a great emotion, the names and ages of all victims of the accident, most of them young, were read at the beginning of a demonstration against Parliament, in the center of Athens. It was then observed a minute of silence in the presence of relatives of the victims, including pediatrician Maria Karystounou, who now leads the struggle of the families of the victims who demand liability of the authorities.

A large crowd also met in Thessalonica, the second largest city in the country, but also in Larissa, near the scene of the accident, and in other cities of the country, according to ERT public television.

Many protesters point to an alleged cover -up of responsibility for the worst train accident in Greece, an accusation made by the collective of families of the victims and civil society.

With paralyzed transport, schools, universities, administrations and stores closed, the country is practically stopped today, responding to the appeal of a 24 -hour general strike.

There are no trains, ‘ferries’, buses or electrical to circulate, while many aerial calls have been canceled. In the center of Athens, many stores ended their doors in solidarity with a deeply shaken Greece by this disaster.

On February 28, 2023, shortly before midnight, a train of Athens to Salonica (North), with more than 350 passengers on board, collided head-on with a train of goods in the Tempe Valley, about 350 kilometers north of the capital. The two trains circulated in the same carril 19 minutes ago without any alarm system was triggered.

In addition to the human error attributed to the head of the local station that night, the investigation immediately revealed severe negligence in the rail network, in particular the failure to adapt security systems to the required patterns.

“Fatal human errors have combined with chronic state failures, violently disturbing our certainties,” the conservative government chief acknowledged in a message on Facebook social network.

More than 40 people have been prosecuted, but none have yet been judged.

The conservative government repeatedly rejected the accusations of opposition parties that there was an “organized plan” to cover up high employees.

Kyriakos Mitsotakis, comfortably reelected just four months after the disaster, denounced an attempt to “destabilize” the country, criticizing “the political instrumentalization of human pain.”

A specialized report funded by the victims’ families concluded that the commodity of goods carried an illegal and unlavoded burden of explosive chemicals, which may have contributed to the high number of dead.
