Civil Protection issues notice to the population due to the forecast of heavy rain, wind and snow

In view of time forecasts for the coming days, the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority advises the adoption of various preventive measures and risk behaviors that should therefore be avoided.

The Portuguese Institute of Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) is foreseen for the coming days, rain, sometimes strong and accompanied by thunderstorm in particular in the Central and South regions, and snowfall over 1,200 to 1,400 meters altitude.

Predictions that, warn you can cause various dangerous situations such as floods, floods, landslides, and collapses, as well as the formation of water sheets or accumulation of ice and/or snow on the roads.

There are, therefore, behaviors that must be adopted by all, “in particular in historically most vulnerable areas.”

Anepc shared with the newsrooms, through a statement, a list of behaviors that must be adopted and so many that should be avoided:

  • Ensure the clearance of rainwater flow systems and removal of inert and other objects that can be dragged or create obstacles to the free flow of water;
  • Ensure adequate fixation of loose structures, namely scaffolding, placards and other suspended structures;
  • Special care in the circulation and permanence with wooded areas, being aware of the possibility of falling branches and trees, due to stronger wind;
  • adopt defensive driving, reducing speed and taking special attention to the eventual accumulation of snow and/or formation of water sheets on road roads;
  • Avoid circulation on roads affected by snow accumulation and when it is not possible, adopt the following measures:
  • Check the condition of the tires and their pressures;
  • Transport and placement of snow chains in vehicles;
  • Ensure fuel supply at levels that allow us to travel alternative routes or the permanence of the vehicle in operation for long periods of time, in case of retention in the affected roads;
  • In electric vehicles, the battery charge should be checked and the existence of charging stations in your itinerary should be checked;
  • Ensure that vehicle heating systems are in good working order;
  • Provide suitable foods in quantity and characteristics, as well as medicines, according to the number and typology of vehicle occupants.
  • on roads affected by snow accumulation, avoid travel with children, the elderly or people with special needs;
  • Avoid circulating on those ways with heavy vehicles, in particular articulated, towing vehicles and rear -wheel drive vehicles;
  • Restrict the movements of vehicles and people as possible, in areas potentially affected by snowfall;
  • Do not cross flooded areas, so as to precipate the drag of people or vehicles to the pavement or open sewage boxes;
  • Remove from confining areas of the normally flooded water lines, animals, agricultural and industrial equipment, vehicles and/or other assets for safe places;
  • Be aware of the information of meteorology and the indications of civil protection and security forces.
