Starmer summons a summit in London on Ukraine, which Sánchez will go
The British Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, has called a meeting of European leaders this Sunday in London to address Ukraine’s security before an eventual agreement that ends the war. Among the attendees will be the president of Ukraine, Volodimir Zelenski, and the president of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez, according to British media.
“The prime minister will use the summit to boost European action on Ukraine, pointing out our immovable collective support to achieve just and lasting peace and a enduring agreement that guarantees the sovereignty and future security of Ukraine,” said a Downing Street spokesman, according to the British newspaper The Telegraph.
Starmer met Thursday with the US president Donald Trump, whom he claimed, without too much success, security guarantees for Ukraine so that Russia does not have the temptation of new invasions. Trump replied that the mere presence of US economic interests in Ukraine – this Friday will sign with Zelenski an agreement for the exploitation of minerals on Ukrainian soil – is sufficient guarantee that there will be no new Russian attacks, in addition to ensuring that he trusts the word of the Russian president, Vladimir Putin.
The Labor leader hopes to receive Zelenski separately in the morning and the Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, in her Downing Street residence, according to the BBC. Then, he plans to maintain a phone call with leaders from the Baltic, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia countries, before presiding over the European summit in the afternoon.
Although the British government has not given details of this appointment, such as the place and time of the meeting, the presence of European leaders from countries such as Germany, France, Italy, the Netherlands and Poland is expected, as well as NATO members. The leader of the Atlantic Alliance, Mark Rutte, will also attend, as well as the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and the president of the European Council, Antonio Costa, on behalf of the EU. The Spanish Executive has already reported the assistance of Pedro Sánchez.
The leaders hope to address the next steps in the planning of security guarantees if a peace agreement in Ukraine is reached and how to strengthen the position of Ukraine. (Agencies)
