The ‘La Monnaie’ from Paris received 220 requests for replacement of medals considered defective by the athletes who competed in the Paris-2024 Olympic Games, which represents 4% of total production, announced on Friday (28) the institution in charge of its manufacture.
“La Monnaie de Paris replaced some of them and continues their replacement campaign at the request of athletes,” the institution wrote in a statement, specifying that the new medals are “identical” to those granted during the Olympics.
Several athletes shared photos of their defective medals on social networks.
The American Nyjah Huston, who finished third in the “Skateboard Street” races on July 29, made public his discontent days later for the poor quality of his bronze medal, which he said, “it seems to have been in war.”
The International Olympic Committee assured AFP on January 13 that the replacement of “defective” medals would be systematic.
The Paris Monnaie, in charge of production and quality control, prefers to use the term “deteriorated” medals. Although, for now, they represent only 4% of the 5,084 medals delivered by the Paris-2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Designed by Casa Chaumet (LVMH Group), the manufacture of gold, silver and bronze medals was entrusted to the French public institution La Monnaie de Paris (Mint).
Each contains a tiny fragment of the Eiffel Tower.
Each medal measures 85mm in diameter, 9.2 mm thick, with different weights, 529 g for gold, 525 g for silver, and 455 g for bronze.
