The biggest star of the 67th opera ball on Thursday was Johann Strauss. Almost the entire opening of the evening was dedicated to the 200th birthday of the legendary Waltz king. Politics and prominence were only sparsely represented in the Vienna State Opera. One man was particularly lacking in the ball: the master builder Richard Lugner, who died in summer. His appearances with international star guests had shaped the opera ball for years. A seat was symbolically kept free for Lugner. The highlight of this year’s opera ball in pictures.
