Why does Ireland celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day?

Saint Patryk was probably born in 385 in Britain. When he was 16, he was kidnapped and transported to Ireland, where he as a slave he dealt with sheep grazing. According to legend, it was at that time that he was particularly inspired by God and thanks to his help he managed to escape from the island 4 years later. Then he also got a message from God to convert pagan Ireland into Christianity. After a few years, he returned and conducted missionary as a bishop. For 40 years, he did many miracles that helped convert the Irish people. The work of Saint Patrick led to the central, western and northern part of the island and introduced an organized form of church activity. Many legends are associated with his activities. The fact that there is no snakes in Ireland is to be due to the saint. Apparently with the help of a wooden chick of St. Patryk chased away reptiles to the sea and forbade them to return to Ireland. Another story talks about how one of the snakes has been outsmarted. Saint. Patryk built a box and invited a crawling gentleman inside. After long discussions, in which the snake claimed that the box was too small for him to prove his right, he entered the box, then Saint. Patryk slammed the lid and threw the box into the sea. Saint Patryk died exactly on March 17, 461 and since then, the Irish people thank him for his activities.

Its history dates back to the 19th century, when the Irish began to organize marches and celebrations in honor of their patron. However, it was only in the 20th century that the inhabitants of Dublin decided to make this day not only a religious holiday, but also a celebration of Irish culture and identity. Every year, on March 17, Dublina streets turn into a stage for artists who tell the story of Ireland – from its mythology, through literature, to contemporary achievements. In 2014, the theme was “the past, present, future”. Participants recreated, among others, the time at Clontarf from 1014, and also referred to the literature of Samuel Beckett and mythological stories about the Celtic tiger. On March 15, the traditional dyeing of the Chicago river will take place in Chicago. There will also be a traditional parade and events with Irish music and food. Australia will also celebrate. On March 16, a parade and festival in Hyde Park, with concerts, dance shows and Irish delicacies are planned in Sydney. On the same day, the parade will also pass through the center of London. It will end with the Festival at Trafalgar Square with live music and traditional dishes. Saint Patrick’s Day events will also include the Caribbean. At Montserrat, the holiday will last from March 15 to 17. This is the only island outside Ireland, where Saint Patrick’s Day is a national holiday.
