Tropical diseases transmit mosquitoes to humans.

The European Commission (EC) on Friday approved the Chikungunya (CHIKV) vaccine for adults and adolescents over 12 years of age, TASR writes, according to DPA report.

“The Commission is determined to use all tools … To handle the risks that are infected with mosquitoes for public health, and to protect its citizens,” said EU Commissioner for Health and Good Living Conditions of Animal Conditions Olivér Várhelyi. The EC originally approved the vaccine in 2024 only for adult users.

Chikungunya is not widespread in the EU, but the incidence of mosquitoes that transmit serious illnesses has increased due to climate change, the Commission said. Infected persons in the EU usually get sick while out of the Union.

According to the European Center for Prevention and Control of Diseases (ECDC), the most common symptoms of fever, muscle, joint and rash are among the most common symptoms. Most people recover completely, but some of them will develop chronic arthritis.

The ECDC states that in 2024 a total of 620,000 cases of Chikungunya infection were detected and 213 deaths in America, Asia, Africa and Europe have also occurred. According to the European Commission, the vaccine was unanimously approved by EU countries after a strict review of the European Medicines Agency (EMA).
