Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky starred in a moment of tension in the White House on Friday, disagreeing with the way to follow the conflict between Ukraine and Russia. During the conversation, the Ukrainian President ranked Vladimir Putin as a “killer,” while Trump insisted that Kiev should show more “gratitude” for the support of the United States.
In the Oval Room, Trump went straight to claim that Zelensky was not in a position of dictating terms and that Ukraine would have to accept a commitment to Russia, otherwise the US could remove its support. US Vice President Jd Vance, who was also present, criticized the Ukrainian leader, accusing him of being “disrespectful.” Zelensky tried to answer, but was interrupted.
The discussion became even more lit when Trump argued that Ukraine would have to give in some aspects to reach a ceasefire, stating that any agreement requires concessions. Zelensky, in turn, rejected this possibility, displaying images of war crimes and reinforcing that he could not negotiate with Putin, whom he called again “killer.” The Ukrainian President also denounced the deportation of Ukrainian children for the Russian forces and the war crimes committed during the invasion.
Trump, however, insisted on his position, accusing Zelensky of not showing appreciation for American support. “It’s putting millions of lives at risk,” Trump said, still accusing him of acting irresponsibly and “playing with World War I.”

During the meeting, Trump revealed that he has had several conversations with Putin, including a telephone call in February, and said a ceasefire agreement may be close. It also mentioned an agreement about to be signed with Zelensky, which would give the US access to Ukrainian natural resources, including essential minerals.
At the end of the meeting, Zelensky challenged Trump to visit Ukraine to see the country’s reality firsthand, saying, “You have to come and witness with your own eyes.”
