Having plants at home or garden implies a series of essential care to ensure that they are healthy and vibrant. However, sometimes the leaves begin to present brown tips, a sign that something may be wrong.
According to Jeremy Yamaguchi, CEO of, and Anastasia Borisevich, plant expert at Plantum, cited by Martha Stewart’s website, there are several common errors that can lead to this problem.
Main causes of brown leaves in plants
1.
Watering too much plants can lead to the rotting of the roots, compromising the absorption of water and nutrients.
“The roots that are constantly exposed to too much water and moisture can have difficulty obtaining the proper oxygen they need, which causes the plant to absorb less water, leading to the death of the leaves,” explains Yamaguchi.
2. Excessive use of fertilizer
Excessive fertilization can result in the accumulation of salts in the soil, damaging the roots and affecting nutrient absorption.
“The roots of damaged plants are unable to provide water and nutrients to plants as needed, which can result in the appearance of brown leaf tips,” adds the expert.
3. Lack of irrigation
If a plant does not receive enough water, it may have dry and nuts.
“Plant leaves begin to die when they don’t receive sufficient hydration,” says Borisevich.

The ideal is to find a balance in watering, ensuring that the soil keeps the proper moisture without being soaked.
4. Excessive exposure to sunlight
Not all plants tolerate direct exposure to the sun during long periods.
Some species, especially those of interior, may suffer sunburn, resulting in dehydrated and brown tips.
“When the leaf tips start to get brown it can be a sign that it is necessary to protect plants from sun damage,” warns Borisevich.
How to prevent the leaves from being brown?
To keep plants healthy and prevent them from developing brown leaves, follow these recommendations:
- Adjust the frequency of irrigation according to the specific needs of the plant;
- Use fertilizers in moderation, respecting the recommended indications for each species;
- Avoid excessive sun exposure on sensitive plants, ensuring that they have sufficient shadow;
- Make regular pruning to remove damaged leaves and promote healthy growth;
- Observe early signs of water stress and adjust care as needed.
Ensuring a proper and balanced environment for plants can prevent problems and maintain their vitality longer.
