The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), Research and Analysis Division of the renowned British magazine The Economist, announced that Brazil fell six positions in its 2024 democracy index, to 57th place, and cited the decision of the (Supreme Court), as well as new details.

The annual ranking was released by EIU on Thursday (27). In the space dedicated to Brazil, the document states that the negative impact of is serious in the country and that the high levels of the problem have led to the politicization of institutions and increased political violence.

In the text, analysts claim that since 2019, the Supreme Court has been conducting “controversial investigations” on the spread of alleged misinformation attacks involving electoral and democratic institutions and threats against court ministers, mostly by right -wing activists.

The unit cites the X lock last year. The decision was taken by the minister (STF) on August 30, 2024. Ox.

In the analysis, EIU stated that restricting access to a platform the way that was made in Brazil for several weeks “has no parallel between democratic countries.”

“The censorship of a group of users has exceeded the boundaries of what can be considered reasonable restrictions on freedom of expression, especially in the middle of an election campaign,” he writes.

The division of the Economist group states that making certain types of illegal discourses based on vague definitions “is an example of the politicization of the judiciary” and that this not only has a frightening effect on freedom of expression, but also opens precedent to the court to censor political discourse, which could unduly influence political results.

According to EIU, the fall of Brazil in the ranking was also negatively affected by new details of the alleged attempt to coup in the 2022 elections against the president (PT) and STF members. This would suggest that Brazilian women, according to the analysis, continue to have low evaluation on civil laws.

EIU also says that the coup plot suggests that there is worrying tolerance to political violence in Brazil, something absent in most consolidated democracies, and cites as an example a, in November last year.
