How do you store cucumbers? This vegetable, loved by many Slovaks, easily loses its freshness. The cause of this problem is most often our ignorance of the right ways of storing them. Many people do not realize how important it is to avoid storage at low temperatures and products that have an adverse effect on them.

In many Slovak households, the refrigerator is the main place for storing vegetables. However, in the case of cucumbers, this decision may shorten their shelf life.

  • Low temperatures have a destructive effect on this fragile vegetable because it is deprived of strength and crunchy.
  • Cucumbers are extremely badly tolerated by cooler conditions than 10 degrees Celsius – so the rear wall of the refrigerator is not particularly suitable for storing them, where the cold is the largest.
  • However, if you decide to store this vegetable in the refrigerator, the alternative may be placement on the appliance door where the temperature is slightly higher. However, a much better decision will be to choose a dry room temperature.

Proper storage of cucumbers is not only a matter of temperature but also the environment.

  • As experts point out, avoid placing this vegetable near some fruits such as bananas, apples or tomatoes.

Why?

  • These popular foods produce ethylene – a natural substance that speeds up the process of ripening and fruiting and vegetables, including cucumbers. As a result, vegetables lose its characteristic crispness and strength.

The right temperature and the right choice of environment can extend the time during which the cucumbers remain fresh. Although compliance with these rules may seem difficult, it is a situation where we reach for a product that is not suitable for consumption instead of a healthy dining table accessory.
