Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, the prices of the essential goods of Cabaz Food have recorded a significant increase, making the budget of Portuguese families tighter. According to Deco Proteste calculations, the rising prices in supermarkets has reached almost 29% in the last three years, reflecting the impact of conflict on food costs.
The evolution of the cost of Cabaz Food
On February 23, 2022, on the eve of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, a cabaz of 63 essential food products cost 183.63 euros.
Three years later, on February 26, 2025, the same set of products costs 236.51 euros, representing an increase of 52,88 euros (28,8%).
Inflation in the food sector has been influenced by factors such as instability in supplying cereals and vegetable oils, increased energy costs and the impact of war on international markets.
The products that increased the most
According to the most significant increases occurred in the categories of fish and meat, two of the food groups most affected by inflation:
- Fish: one kilo of eight varieties of fish now costs 83,35 eurosreflecting a significant climb.
- Carne: The price of one kilo of seven varieties of meat reaches 42,57 eurosmaking this category one of the most weighing on the budget of families.
These increases reflect not only the scarcity of raw materials for food production, but also the impact of conflict on the global supply chain.
