Harvard political scientist and researcher Hussein Kalout made a critical analysis of former President Donald Trump’s approach to US foreign policy. According to Kalout, who participated in the WW Special that will air on Sunday (2) Trump stands negatively among American leaders for their lack of long -term strategic vision.
According to the expert, all American presidents, except for Trump, both Republicans and Democrats, had a clear understanding of the need for a “great American strategy.”
Short -term view
Kalout argues that Trump does not think in terms of a broad strategy, but in a limited horizon of four years of government. “It’s a business policy, a very short -time, it doesn’t have this long -term view,” says the political scientist.
This short -term approach, according to the analyst, prevents Trump from seeing the long -range impacts of his negotiations with Russia or the consequences of the fragmentation of relations with Europe for Western cohesion.
European Union as an antagonist
A crucial point in Kalout’s analysis is Trump’s perception of the European Union. Unlike other American leaders, Trump does not see the European bloc as an added value in the relationship with the United States. On the contrary, he sees the EU as an antagonist to American interests.
“Trump sees the European Union as an antagonist, as a competitor,” explains Kalout. This view leads Trump to believe that the weakening of the EU would tend to strengthen the role of the United States on the world scene.
Kalout’s analysis gains even more relevance by considering Trump’s recent statements, in which he stated that the European Union was created to “screw with the United States.” Such statements reinforce the political scientist’s thesis on Trump’s limited and potentially harmful view regarding international alliances and long -term diplomacy.
