Putin's old spy and friend plan to restart Nord Stream 2 with US support

Plan allows, in theory, that the US has control over energy supply to Europe

An old spy and close friend of Vladimir Putin has been preparing the return of the Nord Stream 2 Russian pipeline for Europe with the support of US investors. According to, which cites sources linked to the process, this is another decision that shows the rapprochement of Washington DC and Moscow.

The plan is being prepared by Mattthias Warnign, a former Stasi officer in East Germany who, by 2023, was responsible for the management of Nord Stream 2’s mother company for Gazprom, Russian gas company. The idea is to attract US investors with the help of the Trump administration, explains the Financial Times.

It is recalled that one of Nord Stream 2’s two pipelines was destroyed following, which destroyed both pipelines of its older sister project, Nord Stream 1. The other pipeline, Nord Stream 2, which has an annual capacity of 27.5 billion cubic meters of natural gas, was not damaged, but has never been used.

The plan that is being designed allows, in theory, that the US has control over the power supply to Europe, advanced to the finance teams linked to the project following the invasion.

The plan has already reached the corridors of Brussels. According to the US newspaper, senior European Union (EU) officials learned of discussions about the plan for Nord Stream 2 and leaders from various European countries expressed concern for the project.

For the plan to advance, it would be necessary for the US to raise sanctions against Russia and agree to resume exports that it has blocked in the last three years. In addition, Germany would also have to authorize the entry of Russian gas to access any potential buyer in Europe.

Under this plan, US investors would receive “money for nothing” and US administration would consider Russia as a “reliable” ally, as it is dependent on the support of “trustworthy Americans,” an former US high official, who was aware of some of the plan details, told Financial Times.

Speaking to Financial Times, Mattthias Warnig guarantees that “he was not involved in any discussions with any American politicians or companies representatives,” adding that he was “following the rules in this regard [como] a person sanctioned by the US ”.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov says he has no information on any conversations related to their pipeline. Gazprom declined to comment.

Warnig, 69, explained that he became a close friend of Putin in the 1990s, after opening an office to Banco Dresdner in St. Petersburg, where the then unknown Putin ran the city’s International Relations Committee.

The two became so close that Putin asked Warnig to welcome his daughters at the banker’s home in Rödermark when the mother was seriously injured in a road accident.
