Measure is a response to Trump, which promotes a trade war with allied countries and with China

Justin Trudeau (Liberal, Center left), Prime Minister of Canada, announced that from this 3rd (4.Mar.2025) the country began to apply 25% reciprocal tariffs on US products in response to US rates imposed by Donald Trump (Republican), which came into force on the same date.

In a statement issued on Monday (3.mar), Trudeau stated that “Nothing justifies these measures (from the US) ”. The Prime Minister also said that “If US tariffs come into force, Canada will respond from midnight by applying rates of 25% to US $ 155 billion in US goods.”. The information was released by the agency Reuters.

“We know this is an existential threat to us and that thousands of Canadian jobs are at stake”said the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Canada, Mélanie Joly, hours before Trudeau’s statement. “We are ready with $ 155 billion in tariffs and we are ready with the first installment of tariffs, which is $ 30 billion”disse Joly.

Trump adopted his rate of tariffs claiming that Canada and Mexico would have allowed the uncontrolled entry of immigrants and drugs. The measures would be implemented in early February, but were suspended in the face of an agreement between the countries. After 1 month, Trump resumed the taxation.

The US also decided to charge products imported from China to 20%. The Chinese government announced, in response, that from March 10, it will charge an additional 10% and 15% over various agricultural products, including meat, fruits, vegetables, soy and corn.
