The confirmation of Linda McMahon was accompanied by concerns about the possible abolition of the Ministry of Education proposed by President Trump.
Former head of the private organization World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) Linda McMahon was confirmed on Monday as Minister of Education in the US President Donald Trump administration. Its nomination was supported by most 51 senators, voting all 45 senators present for the Democratic Party, AP and AFP reported.
Larger powers by the state
Seventy -six -year -old McMahon said before the vote that she would limit the political influence of the federal government in the field of education and give more powers to individual states. At the same time, Trump announced during the election campaign that the Ministry of Education will be canceled in the case of his victory in the presidential election.
McMahon was an important donor and supporter of Trump. She was also a co -chairman of the temporary team that Trump compiled before joining the office to prepare the takeover of power under Democrat Joe Biden and coordinated the occupation of approximately 4000 positions.
The Federal Government plays a predominantly secondary role in the funding of education in the United States. According to the teacher’s trade union, approximately 13 percent of the funds for primary and secondary schools come from federal sources, the rest are provided by individual states and municipalities. However, federal contributions are particularly important for schools that serve families with low incomes and learning problems.
Possible abolition of the Ministry of Education has encountered sharp criticism by democratic members of the congress, associations of teachers and many parents who consider it an unprecedented attack on public education.
