Government of Acre decrees alertness due to the increase in rainfall and full of rivers

The student of the Master in Forest Sciences of the Federal University of Acre (UFAC), Kennedy da Silva Melo, had an article published in the international scientific journal “Atmosphere”. The study, conducted in co -authorship and written in English, analyzes precipitation trends and decreased Andean snow cover, highlighting the hydrological impacts for the Acre River basin.

The article corresponds to the second chapter of the researcher’s dissertation. Entitled “Andean Snowfall Trends: Climate Interactions and Hydrological Impacts in the Acre River Basin (1982–2023)”, the study presents data that highlights relevant climate change for the region.

Among the results, the increase in rainfall in February, the reduction of precipitation during the dry season and the extension of this period was highlighted. The research also points to a decrease in snow cover in the Andean region, a factor that can directly affect the water basin of populations such as Rio Branco.

These climate change have the potential to change rainfall, prolong the dry season and intensify the risk of forest fires. Acre has more often faced extreme climate events, such as large floods and prolonged droughts.

The study used temporal precipitation series (1982–2023), air temperature (2001–2020), fire focuses, vegetation and snow cover (2001–2023), applying statistical methods that ensured analyzes on the subject.
