The PSP detained 723 people in Portugal and learned 43 firearms, 29 white weapons and 24,100 doses of drugs in the last eight days during the Carnival in Safety 2025, was announced on Tuesday.
In a statement, the PSP indicates that over the course of the eight days of the police operation “Carnival in Security 2025” made 723 arrests in Portugal, and 283 people were arrested by road crimes, “named 138 for driving a vehicle in a state of drunkenness and 144 for lack of legal qualification to drive”, reads in the statement.
Also arrested were 51 citizens for crimes, theft and theft and 76 people on suspicion of drug trafficking, adds the same statement.
During the time period, the PSP seized 24,100 individual doses of varied drugs, as well as 43 firearms and 29 white weapons, about 17,000 pyrotechnic articles and 33 kilos of explosive liquid content.
On road prevention, PSP adds that 17,017 drivers were inspected and 52,180 vehicles by radar were controlled, and 5,539 infractions to road legislation were detected.
“Of the road offenses detected, there are 609 for speeding of speeding, 558 due to lack of compulsory periodic inspection, 193 due to lack of mandatory civil liability insurance, 119 for the use of the mobile phone in the exercise of driving, 93 for driving under the influence of alcohol, 50 due to lack or incorrect use of the seat belt and 24 due to lack or incorrect use of retention systems.”
In eight days of operation “Carnival in Security 2025”, the PSP registered 1,177 accidents, resulting in 358 injured -15 serious injuries and 343 minor injuries -and four deaths. Two of the deaths were as a result of a collision in the municipality of Lagoa (Azores), on February 24, one following one of the municipality of Seixal, on March 1, and the other following the municipality of Machico (Madeira), on March 3.
It has appealed on Tuesday drivers to “drive safely, adapting their driving to weather conditions and the state of the floor” and asked not to adopt behaviors that may decrease their capabilities, namely speeding driving or under the influence of alcohol ”.
Police also advise people to travel “in timely for the party places” and to parking on the “places indicated not to condition the circulation of pedestrians, emergency corridors and the entry or exit of properties.”
Respect the indications of the police that are in the festivities and “not to use, nor to store pyrotechnics that can cause serious injuries are other advice from PSP.
