The United States is elaborating a plan to potentially relieve the sanctions imposed on Russia, as President Donald Trump seeks to restore ties with Moscow and for an end to war in Ukraine, Reuters told US authority and another person familiar with the matter.

The White House has asked the State and Treasury departments to elaborate a list of sanctions that can be relieved for US authorities to discuss the issue with Russian representatives in the coming days, as part of the large government conversations with Moscow to improve diplomatic and economic relations, sources said.

Sanction offices are now preparing a proposal to suspend sanctions to selected entities and individuals, including some Russian oligarchs, according to the sources.

The so -called options of options are usually prepared by employees working with sanctions, but the specific request of the White House for a document in recent days emphasizes the willingness of Trump and his advisers to relieve Russian sanctions as part of a possible agreement with Moscow.

The White House, the State Department, the Treasury Department and the Russian embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to a commentary request.

Last year, Kremlin described relations with the US as “below zero” under the government of Joe Biden, a Democrat who supported Ukraine with help and weapons and imposed harsh sanctions on Russia to punish her for her 2022.

But Trump, who promised a quick end to the war, quickly altered US politics to open conversations with Moscow, starting with a call to Russian President Vladimir Putin on February 12, followed by meetings between American and Russian authorities in Saudi Arabia and Turkey.

In January, Trump threatened to increase sanctions against Russia if Putin was not willing to negotiate the end of the war in Ukraine. However, more recently, Trump government officials openly recognized the possibility of relieving sanctions against Moscow.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said during an interview on February to Bloomberg Television that Russia could get economic relief, depending on how it approached negotiations in the coming weeks. Trump told reporters on February 26 that Russian sanctions could be relieved “at some point”
