Black Lives Matter Plaza, a boardwalk located near the White House, will be reformulated, as announced by Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser.
A great phrase “Black Lives Matter” (Black Lives import) in yellow was painted on the asphalt and the boardwalk was renamed in 2020, during Donald Trump’s first term after protests against police brutality against blacks in the US.
The decision to “reformulate” the place, however, generated discontent among some residents of the city. Protests occurred in the square on Tuesday night (4), after Bowser announced the “evolution” on their social networks.
The mayor mentioned that the new initiative will invite students and artists to create murals in all eight districts of the city, but emphasized that the city cannot be distracted by “meaningless congressional interference”, referring to a recent bill that proposes changes in the square.
This is because the mayor’s proposal came a day after Deputy Andrew Clyde, a republican of Georgia, present a bill requiring the mayor to remove the phrase “Black Lives Matter” [vidas negras importam] From the square and rename it as “Liberty Plaza” [praça da liberdade]besides removing the expression of official documents and materials from the city.
