Measure authorizes the use of R $ 333 million from the hydroelectric surplus to avoid readjustment; full will be published on Wednesday (5.mar) in the “Official Gazette”

The President (PT) signed this Thursday (4.mar.2025) a decree that prevents the 6% readjustment in the Itaipu fare, scheduled for this month. THE Poder360 confirmed that the measure will be published in the Wednesday edition (5.mar) of the (Official Gazette of the Union).

Prepared by the (Ministry of Mines and Energy), the decree establishes that the (National Electric Energy Agency) will be authorized to make compensation whenever there is a positive balance in the Itaipu accounts.

This year, Supeavit’s forecast is R $ 1.5 billion, of which R $ 333 million will be used by the agency to avoid the tariff increase of 6%. The value is sufficient to cover the difference and keep energy prices stable.

The main reason for this positive balance was the low generation of energy, resulting from drought. Operating costs were calculated for higher electricity production, but drought resulted in financial surplus.

According to this digital newspaper, Aneel’s Director-General said the Itaipu bonus will be sufficient to pay the $ 120.9 million deficit from the hydroelectric and use the rest to shoot down the electricity bill of consumers who have a consumption of less than 350 kWh (kilowatts-hours) at least 1 month.

Permanent compensation

Previously, the President would need to sign a decree every year to authorize the compensation of Itaipu’s surplus resources.

With the new decree, Aneel may perform this process whenever there is a positive balance, without depending on annual government interventions. It aims to give more stability and predictability to the electricity sector.
