The Dr. Waldemar Tebaldi Municipal Hospital in Americana (SP) said it interrupted on Wednesday afternoon (5) the brain death protocol of Pedro Severino, 19, the Red Bull Bragantino under-20 player.
In a statement, the hospital reports that it has made the decision “due to the patient’s present cough reflex and that,” the young man will continue with sedation and mechanical ventilation, use of norepinephrine and optimized antibiotics to avoid infections. “
According to the statement, the protocol, which was started at 4:30 pm on Tuesday (4), will be resumed if the player has no more reflection.
The brain death protocol is a set of exams and procedures used to confirm the loss of brain functions.
In order to confirm the brain death, in addition to the clinical examination, which must be performed by two different doctors, with a minimum interval of one hour between the first and second, the patient should undergo an apnea test and these complementary exams.
Severino suffered head trauma after a serious accident at dawn on Tuesday (4), on the Anhanguera Highway.
The initial medical report, released by the Americana City Hall, reported that he had been referred to emergency surgery when he entered the hospital.
