Paraguay removed the candidacy of Chancellor Rubén Ramírez Lezcano to command the Organization of American States (OAS).

Right candidate, Lezcano was supported by countries such as the United States and Panama.

The confirmation of the removal of the Paraguayan chancellor of the candidacy came through a note from Paraguayan President Santiago Peña.

According to the note, the withdrawal of supporting Lezcano by some allies was one of the main reasons for the decision.

With the departure of Lezcano from the electoral race, the chances of Suriname Chancellor Albert Ramdin increase, win the post.

Last Tuesday (4), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Brazil.

Bolivia, Chile, Colombia and Uruguay have announced that they will also follow the decision of the.

The election for the general secretariat of happens next Monday, March 10.

Since 2015, the position has been held by the former Foreign Minister of Uruguay.

The organization of American states is an international organization that has 35 members. Headquartered in Washington and founded in 1948, it is the oldest and most expressive multilateral organization of the Americas.

See the note published by the Government of Paraguay:

In the middle of last year, Paraguay made the decision to submit an application to occupy the General Secretariat of the Organization of American States (OAS).

This candidacy had an unenforceable objective: the recovery of the OAS institutional relevance, giving it a new protagonism supported by modern and efficient management that took into account the ties of solidarity and fraternity that unite our continent, above particular and ideological interests.

In this view, it is not up to the separation of sister peoples for ideological or conjunctural reasons, but the struggle for the values, principles and ideals that make our continent one.

The candidacy, based on these values, had great receptivity and support from many member states of the organization.

However, in recent days, abruptly and inexplicably, Paraguay has been informed by friends in the region’s friends, with which we shared space and common history, which they have modified their initial commitment to our country and decided not to finally support Paraguay’s proposal.

Paraguay, throughout its rich history, has been a country that has always based its positions on these high principles and values, and will not renounce them for a particular election or conjuncture.

Analyzing all these elements, I made the decision to remove the candidacy of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Rubén Ramírez Lezcano, a long-trajectory diplomat who won not only regional, but worldwide to the OAS Secretariat General.

I deeply thank those countries who, with conviction, loyalty and principles, maintained their support for our candidacy.

Also I ratify Paraguay’s commitment to continue working tirelessly in building a hemisphere and an OAS where first principles, values and ideals, that is, of this America that is “a brunette and cheerful”, in the words of an unforgettable Paraguayan.
