Sudan filed a lawsuit against the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Wednesday at the International Court of Justice (MSD) in the Hague. He claims that UAE are involved in genocide, Because they allegedly support Sudanese paramilitary forces of rapid support (RSF), which have been in the war with the Sudanese army for almost two years. According to the AFP report, TASR reports this.
UAE according to Sudan “They participate in the genocide of the Masalites (community in Sudan) by the fact that They manage and provide extensive financial, political and military support for the RSF insurgent militias, ” He said on Thursday in the MSD statement.
The United Arab Emirates have repeatedly rejected claims that they are supporting RSF, which have been fighting against the Sudanese army since April 2023. The war claimed tens of thousands of victims and more than 12 million people were displaced. In some parts of Sudan there is a famine. The UN describes the situation in Sudan as currently worldwide worst crisis concerning hunger and displacement.
Sudan called on the International Court of Justice to issue interim measures and force the UAE, among other things, to pay compensation. “The United Arab Emirates must fully compensate for the damage caused by its internationally unlawful conduct, including the payment of compensation for the victims of war,” Sudan stated in his opinion. Sudan accused RSF of genocide, murder, theft, rape, violent displacement, unauthorized entry into the territory, vandalism of public property and human rights violations. According to Sudan, RSFs have committed these actions thanks to direct support from the UAE.
MSD decisions are legally binding, but the court has no power to enforce compliance, AFP recalls. In the meantime, the SAE also described the Sudan’s step as a “Cynical advertising trick” and stated that they would strive for a dismissal of the action.
According to the UAE representative is The aim of Sudan “to distract from the proven participation of the Sudanese armed forces in extensive atrocities that continue to destroy Sudan and its inhabitants”. According to him, the accusations of Sudan have no legal or factual basis and represent another attempt to distract from the Sudanese war.
