US President Donald Trump has granted an exemption of one month to car manufacturers regarding new tariffs on imports in Mexico and Canada.
“We talked to the three major car dealers […]. Let’s give an exemption of a month, ”said Trump, quoted by the Associated Press (AP) agency.
Tariffs were a threat from the US president against Mexico and Canada and entered Tuesday in force, increasing the risk of retaliation of these Washington allies.
Imports from Canada and Mexico are taxed at 25%, while Canadian energy products are subject to 10%rates.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said today that Mexico is in a “very decisive moment” after the announcement of the imposition by the United States of tariffs.
The head of state has insisted, therefore, that the country will “seek” other business partners, such as Canada, if such rates remain, considering the next few days crucial.
“What I can tell you is that it is a very decisive moment for Mexico, depending on what happens these days, until Sunday,” Sheinbaum said in his daily press conference.
On Tuesday, the president of Mexico announced that the country will respond with retaliatory tariffs on US products.
The Prime Minister of Canada, in turn, announced the imposition of 25% tariffs on US imports in response to Trump’s “trade war” in a battle in which he defended Canada’s character and said the country will not stop.
Trudeau had already advanced on Monday that he would implement Trump’s tariff retaliation measures, despite temporarily postponing the introduction of these rates in exchange for measures against drug trafficking.
The president of the United States threatened to increase rates on Canadian products if Canada chooses to impose 25% rates on US imports.
