UN unlocks 102 million euros from a fund to compensate for cuts in humanitarian aid

Money should be used to protect the most vulnerable populations to climate change

The UN today released $ 110 million (102 million euros) from its emergency fund to compensate “the sharp decline” in the values for humanitarian aid worldwide, especially from the United States.

These emergency funds aim to “strengthen vital assistance in 10 of the world’s most sub -financed and neglected crises in Africa, Asia and Latin America,” the organization says in particular, citing Sudan, which currently faces the worst humanitarian crisis in the world.

One third of the total value will go to Sudan, as well as to neighboring Chad, who is welcoming refugees who have fled the conflicts in Sudan.

“For countries affected by conflict, climate change and economic crises, drastic budget cuts do not mean that humanitarian needs have disappeared,” UN Undersecretary-General said for humanitarian affairs and emergency relief coordinator Tom Fletcher.

Funds released today “will also strengthen the humanitarian response in Afghanistan, Central African Republic, Honduras, Mauritania, Niger, Somalia, Venezuela and Zambia,” the statement says without further details.

Money should be used to protect the most vulnerable populations to climate change.

By 2025, more than 300 million people will depend on humanitarian aid, “but financing is decreasing each year” and “should fall to a historically low level this year,” he adds.

Overall, the main budgets of UN humanitarian agencies and non -governmental organizations have dramatically decreased.

But it was the decision of the United States – so far, by far, the largest humanitarian aid supplier – to freeze almost all foreign aid and then cut a significant portion that caused an unprecedented crisis in many organizations.

In the statement, the UN recalls that it estimated humanitarian needs by $ 45 billion to help 185 million of the most vulnerable people affected by crises around the world.

“So far, only 5% of this financing has been received, leaving a deficit of over 42 billion,” the UN insists.
