Google -controller Alphabet will begin testing a new search mode based on artificial intelligence, allowing users to ask more complex and multiple parts questions – an indicative of how the company’s main product can evolve.
The new feature, called AI mode, simultaneously performs several related search in the background, predicting which subthemes may interest the user and presenting a unified response that summarizes multiple consultations, explained Robby Stein, vice president of Google search product in an interview.
The AI mode will be accessed through a separate tab from the main search page, being ideal for more complex issues that do not fit well with traditional keyword searches. According to Stein, Google’s initial tests showed that IA mode questions are on average twice as long than conventional searches.

“The tool offers information from the entire internet and the most up -to -date systems on Google,” said Stein. The AI mode can process texts, images and videos, being based on the Gemini 2.0, the company’s latest artificial intelligence model.
The launch of mode was almost a year after Google has introduced AI overviews, a functionality that uses it would directly answer some user questions, above the traditional list of links. The new feature, which will initially be made available to users registered in the experimental testing program, is another company movement to maintain its relevance in the face of startup competition such as OpenAi, who have been competing for their space in the search market.

A differential of the IA mode is that it will be available first to Google AI subscribers, marking a subtle change in the Google search business model, which has always been free to all users.
For years, the company is reluctant to make major search changes, which generated almost 60% of Google’s total revenue in the last quarter. However, the rise of OpenAi’s chatgPT challenged the traditional web search model through keywords, introducing the idea of an AI system capable of answering questions more conversationally. Since then, other AI -based search startups such as Perplexity and Anthropic have also entered the market.

Google still has an advantage for its access to up -to -date internet data, detailed billions of products of products and its knowledge base Knowledge Graph, which has been helping to deliver relevant answers for years.
However, by summarizing internet information with AI, Google risks reducing traffic to websites that create this content and depend on this audience to generate revenue. Stein argued that the way “opens opportunities for websites to stand out and help more users,” but the concern between content creators is growing, as direct AI -made answers can cause fewer users to click on the links to access the full information.
In addition to AI mode, Google has announced that AI overviews will be improved with technology from the latest version of Gemini, allowing users to ask even more complex questions, especially in areas such as math and programming. The functionality will also be made available to adolescents.
