João Fonseca and Fernanda Torres: Idols of Brazil – 07/03/2025 – Marina Izidro

At the Oscar ceremony, the producer of “Anora” – with an infinitely smaller budget than some rivals that won five statuettes, including the best movie – said in her speech: “For all who dream, and for young filmmakers, tell the stories you want to tell you. I promise, they won’t regret it.”

At a time when the comparison with the other is constant, the message is a necessary incentive to be authentic and to believe in their own potential.

With authenticity and talent, among many other attributes, João Fonseca and Fernanda Torres were consolidated as new idols in Brazil. This excerpt from the speech has some relationship with their trajectory.

The actress and tennis player have common qualities: they are charismatic, they understand their importance in representing Brazil around the world and demonstrate in their interviews and attitudes the pride of doing this.

Fernanda, as a consecrated and experienced actress; John, at 18 and at the beginning of a brilliant potential trajectory. And in the midst of so many stars of cinema and sport that, whether for excess media training or lack of content, have empty speeches, it is encouraging to hear João and Fernanda always speaking so genuinely.

Here, on the other side of the ocean, João is praised by the great tennis and Fernanda by cinema specialists and the public. Prior to the delivery of the Best Actress Award, the English TV channel commentator in which I watched the ceremony said, “Fernanda won’t win, but should.” The recognition of their talent is unquestionable.

The fact that the Rio Open tournament and the Oscar were, respectively, just before and during the carnival, made the moment even more special. Seeing excited children with sneakers, watching on television or in full arenas, crowds celebrating the victory of “I’m still here”, shows that Brazilians value culture and sports and will accompany them if there is incentive for it.

It is good to remember, however, that it takes patience and understanding. In any competition, there is the imponderable and the merit of the rival. Moreover, in many professions, meritocracy does not exist when it is not part of the same financial level.

In international disputes, Brazilians often go out at a disadvantage, even more talent than opponents from other countries. They have to pierce Eurocentrism, language barrier, geographical distance from major centers in Europe and the United States. In Brazil, public policies do not focus on how they should in these two sectors, and depend on private incentives in film and “Paitocínios” at the beginning of their sports career creates a financial abyss when it is necessary to compete in euros and dollars.

Therefore, the fact that João and Fernanda (and I extend the merits to the whole team of the movie), to begin with, have been able to pierce this bubble, is worthy of many, many applause.

For politicians and managers, it should be obvious: investing in artistic and sports areas is an effective way to promote the image of Brazil and receive opportunities in return. Nonetheless, it is as we have been admired in recent decades internationally.

And it is part of something deeper: without art and sport, a country does not create or recognize its own identity.
