Meet the Portuguese island with colorful houses where you live less three years than in the rest of the country

The average life expectancy corresponds to the number of years that a person at birth can expect to live. When it comes to average life expectancy in Portugal, the data often refer to people on the continent. At this moment, in mainland Portugal, the average life expectancy is fixed in the 81 years and two months, but there is a Portuguese island where you live less three years.

The debate about the differences between the average life expectancy in mainland Portugal and in the Azores and Madeira archipelagos began after José Manuel Rodrigues, the CDS-PP head of regional legislative elections, gave an interview to RTP Madeira where he said that in the autonomous region the age of the reform should be lower than the age of national reform, since “the average life expectancy in Madeira is two years and two months lower than national”.

In mainland Portugal, 81 years and two months live on average

It is certain that the data from September 2024 give José Manuel Rodrigues right. While the average life expectancy on the continent is approximately 81 years and two months, in the autonomous region of Madeira the average number of years of life of the population is approximately 79 years.

However, in the Autonomous Region of the Azores, one lives even less than in Madeira. For example, on Terceira Island, Azores, the average life expectancy is fixed in 78 years and two months, less three years than in mainland Portugal.

Angra do Heroismo stands out for its colorful homes

Although life on Terceira Island is shorter than in the rest of the country, be sure to visit the island and its capital, Angra do Heroísmo, which was the first Azorean settlement to be elevated to the city, in 1534. Angra do Heroismo stands out mainly for their colorful homes, which are daily targeted by several photographs that will then stop social networks.

There are no flights from Faro to the third, but can always travel directly to the island from Lisbon or Porto. If you really want to take the trip from the Algarve, you can always catch one of the direct flights between Faro and the Island of São Miguel, and you need to take another plane to make the connection between Ponta Delgada and the Lajes Air Base.
