Femicida will be punished by life imprisonment.
The Italian government has approved the bill, which for the first time introduces the legal definition of femicide (the death of a woman as a result of an intimate partner) in the country’s criminal law and punishes it to life imprisonment. TASR reports according to AP.
The government wants to stop a series of murders and violence against women
This step was announced on the eve of International Women’s Day to stop the current series of murders and violence against women in Italy, along with other measures against gender -related crimes.
The government proposal must now be discussed and approved by both chambers of parliament and sign the President.
“This is an extremely important bill. It introduces the crime of phemicide into our legal system as an autonomous crime and punishes it to life imprisonment, “said conservative Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who supported the initiative.
“It is introducing aggravating circumstances and increasing crimes, including bad treatment of people, persecution, sexual violence and revenge pornography,” she said.
The center -left opposition welcomed this step, but stressed that the new law is only dealing with the criminal aspect of the problem and the economic and cultural differences do not solve.
Recently violent incidents ending in the death of women have restored a public debate on gender -related crimes. Extremely striking was the killing of Giulie Cecchettin, a 22-year-old student, who in November 2023 brutally stabbed the former friend Filippo Turetta. Last December he was sentenced to life imprisonment.
Recent studies have shown that the number of murders in the Mediterranean country is declining, women’s murders tend to remain at the same level and remains strictly linked to the family or the “emotional sphere” of the victims.
According to official data of the Ministry of the Interior, in 2024 113 murders of women, 99 of which were committed by relatives, partners or former partners.
