The government of US President Donald Trump has canceled concessions and contracts in a total of US $ 400 million for Columbia University in New York, due to “inaction from the persistent harassment of Jewish students,” the GSA Administration (GSA) said.
The US government reported that the canceled funds would come from the $ 5 billion granted to Columbia in the form of subsidies, GSA said in a joint statement with the Department of Justice, the Department of Education and the Department of Health and Human Services.
Columbia has been at the center of university protests in which protesters demanded the end of US support to Israel in the face of civil deaths and the humanitarian crisis caused by the Israeli attack on Gaza.
There were allegations of anti -Semitism and Islamophobia in protests and counterprotects. Columbia had already said that he was striving to combat anti -Semitism.
“The cancellation of these taxpayer funds is our strongest sign that the federal government will not be part of an educational institution like Columbia, which does not protect Jewish students and employees,” Leo Terrell said, who leads the Department of Justice Anti-Semitism task force.
It was not immediately clear which subsidies and contracts were being cut.
