Economic and political tensions between the United States and the other World Cup countries of the 2026 World Cup, Canada and Mexico, will make the “more exciting,” said US President Donald Trump after signing a decree to create a task force for the event.
Speaking of the Oval Hall alongside FIFA President Gianni Infantino, Trump said that the task force, of which he will be the president, will coordinate with federal agencies the planning, organization and execution of the 48 teams global soccer tournament.
Import tariffs
Earlier this week, the Trump government imposed 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico products before announcing a one-month suspension last Thursday (5) for the two countries that are in accordance with a commercial pact in North America.
When asked about the World Cup in the face of current commercial tensions between the three nations, Trump said last Friday (7): “I think it will make her more exciting.”
Exceptions to the two largest US business partners expire on April 2, when Trump threatens to impose a global regime of reciprocal tariffs on all US business partners.
The World Cup will be held from June 11 to July 19, 2026. The expanded tournament will have 104 matches instead of the 64 previous games, including an extra knockout phase.
