Tequila manufacturers in Mexico remained shocked this week after US President Donald Trump imposed a 25 %corporal duties to the Central American state.

Last year they have exported more than two thirds of their production to the US. TASR informs about this on the basis of AFP report.

According to the Mexican Regulatory Council for Tequil, up to 335 million liters of nearly 500 million liters of popular alcoholic beverage were directed to the US last year.

“A possible increase in Tequila prices in the United States after the introduction of tariffs could support its replacement of other alcoholic beverages,” said Ana Cristina Villalpando Fonseca, director of the Tequila National Chamber (Camara Nacional de la Industria Tequiler, CNIT).

She pointed out that duties could influence the entire supply chain from Agave producers through the production of Tequila to bottle and transport. This industry in Mexico employs more than 100,000 people.

In the US, Tequila is very popular, which also benefited from some American celebrities that they earned on advertising. In 2020, they were joined by technology billionaire Elon Musk, launched the limited edition of Tesla Tequila.

In January 2025, Tequila exports jumped by 34.6 % compared to the same month of the previous year, although the CNIT has attributed this increase to the accumulation of stocks from the anticipated duties.

CNIT said it would support expansion to other markets abroad. And the Mexican government believes will take measures to help alleviate the impact of tariffs on producers.
