Italy wants to expand the army by 40,000 troops by 2033

Defense Minister Guido Crosso presented a plan to strengthen the Italian army by 40,000 troops under the new security program.

The Italian government plans to strengthen the professional army by 40,000 soldiers by 2033 to reach 135,000 soldiers. According to DPA, TASR reports this.

According to La Repubblica, La Stampa and Ansa newspapers, Minister of Defense Guido Crosetto entered the creation of a new plan of national security. It is supposed to respond to changes in the geopolitical environment and to employment gaps in recent years, reports. The timeframe of the gradual extension was set at 2030 to 2033.

The plan could be funded by the European Union program

The Italian plan could finance the recently announced European Union program to increase defense spending. So far, politicians have not provided any official comments on the report.

The right -wing government of Prime Minister Giorgie Meloni has provided great support for Ukraine to avert the Russian invasion. Meloni is also considered one of the preferred European leaders in President Donald Trump’s administration.
