The regions of Tuscano, Piemonte, Alto Adige, Abruzzo and Umbria stand out for the production of elegant white wines with their own identity
It is known, predominantly, for its red, striking, opulent wines (Chianti, Barolo, Amarone, etc.), however it is also the cradle of exceptional white wines, ranging from fresh and unpretentious consumption, to many of very high complexity.
They have incredible diversity, reflecting the influence of terroir and varieties of grown grapes in each region. The regions of Tuscano, Piedmonte, Alto Adige, Abruzzo and Umbria stand out for the production of elegant white wines with their own identity.
The main Tuscany are the Vernaccia di San Gimignano, Tuscan, Tuscan, Red and Malvasia Bianca. Recently, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc have also gained space. Tuscan whites are generally fresh, mineral and balanced. Vernaccia di San Gimignano, for example, offers citrus and almond notes, as well as vibrant acidity. They follow well fruits of the seafood, dishes based on fresh herbs and light cheese; You are usually consumed young, but Vernaccia di San Gimignano can evolve well for up to 5-8 years.
From Piedmont see wines with great typical and freshness and the main white grapes are courtesis (used in GAV), Arneis and Moscato Bianco. Piemontesis white wines range from light and aromatic styles such as GAVI (made of courtese), and more structured, such as arneis, which have stone fruits and herbs. Gavi harmonizes well with seafood and light dishes, while arneis wines combine with white meats and matured cheese. Most Piemontese white wines should be consumed young, but some well -elaborated GAVI and Arneis can get older for up to 8 to 10 years.
In turn, the Alto Adige stands out for the production of Pinot Grigio, Gewürztraminer, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. Alto Adige’s white wines are fresh, aromatic and elegant, presenting floral notes, tropical and mineral fruits. Gewürztraminer is especially significant, with intense aromas of lichia and spices. The ADIGE wines combine with Asian dishes, strong cheeses and seafood. Depending on the style, these wines can get older for up to 10 years, especially examples of Sauvignon Blanc and Gewürztraminer.
From Abruzzo the main white grape is the Trebbian D’Abruzzo, followed by Pecorino and Passarina. Abruzzo white wines are fresh and structured, with notes of citrus fruits, white flowers and a striking mineral character. They harmonize well with fish dishes, seafood and pasta with light sauces. Young people are usually consumed, but Trebbiano d’Abruzzo of quality may age for over 10 years.
And the umbriad? The white wines of the umbria are rich, structured and have notes of ripe fruits, flowers and a mineral touch. They come well with poultry dishes, stuffed pasta and medium ripening cheeses. The best copies can age for up to 10-15 years, gaining complexity and depth.
Northern Italy offers a wide variety of white wines, each with unique characteristics and excellent harmonization capacity.
