The EU still considers the US to be an ally, although the differences persist, said the head of EC Ursula von Der Leyen and emphasized the need to address joint challenges.
The European Union still sees the United States as an ally despite some statements of US President Donald Trump, said the head of the European Commission (EC) Ursula von Der Leyen on Sunday. This is reported to TASR, according to the AFP report.
“Of course, the United States is still allies. Yes, there are differences between us, but if you look at our common interests, they always outweigh our differences. We will also have them, but we have to solve them, ”said Leyen.
“Something fundamental has changed. Our European values - democracy, freedom and the rule of law – are at risk. The world around us changes at the speed of light. Geopolitical changes are shaken by alliances, decades old certainty are collapsing, ”said Leyen.
The President of the European Commission stated on the future of the transatlantic alliance that, despite “persistent putt, does not mean that the model we had the last 25 to 30 years is still correct”.
Von der der Leyen added that over the coming weeks, the first meeting of EU Commissioners focused on “external and internal security, energy, defense and research”, where they will also focus on cyber security, trade and “foreign interference”.
