Argentina will begin this week a trial against the medical team of the late Football icon Diego Maradona for negligence homicide, a case that has carried emotions in the country where the World Cup winner still has an almost divine bow.

The trial, which is expected to last months, begins on Tuesday (11), more than four years after Maradona’s death in November 2020, by heart failure at 60, after undergoing brain surgery days earlier. Your medical team usually rejects the accusations.

A court in San Isidro, on the outskirts of Buenos Aires, will hear about 120 testimonies. The defendants are accused of “simple homicide with eventual intent” in the treatment of former player of Boca Juniors and Napoli.

Maradona’s death shook the South American nation, where he was revered, causing a period of mourning and furious accusations about who was to blame after the battle of years of the icon against addiction and precarious health.

Nicknamed “D10s”, a joke with the Spanish word for God, and “Pelusa” for her prominent hair, Maradona fought alcohol and drug addiction, but was worshiped – even in tattoos – by her imperfect genius that led Argentina to glory at the 1986 World Cup.

This intensified anger around his death, while a medical board appointed to investigate the circumstances concluded in early 2021 that the football star’s medical team had acted “inadequate, deficient and reckless.”

“I hope there is justice because they killed him. Diego (Maradona) should be alive, ”Argentine merchant Luis Alberto Suárez told Reuters in Buenos Aires. “They didn’t take care of him.”

However, not everyone was so sure.

“I can only talk about what I see from outside. But we can’t say whether they were wrong or not, ”said self -employed worker Martin Milei.

“In retrospective, they missed completely. But I think there are more responsible people than what is being said. ”

Unemployed Argentine Pablo Knopfler said he expects the trial to discover the truth.

“I hope there is a trial to know more clearly what happened to Diego,” he said. “Perhaps there is someone above us or maybe Diego himself who wants to clarify what happened to him so that the truth is revealed.”
