The Liberal Party of Canada chose Mark Carnery as the party chief and prime minister of the country, according to a announcement made on Sunday (9). After receiving 85.9% of liberal votes, he replaces Justin Trudeau, who took power in 2015 and saw his popularity plummeted recently.

Carney has already led the central banks of Canada and England and used her experience in the economy as an argument to put themselves as the best option for office in the midst of a trade war with the United States. The 59-year-old former banker is the first person outside of traditional politics to become Canadian Prime Minister.

He competed against Chrystia Freeland, former Minister of Finance and Vice-Minister (8% of the votes); Karina Gould, who was the chamber leader (3.2% of the votes); and Frank Baylis, former Member of Parliament (3% of the votes).

The new prime minister will have to, and may soon face opposition conservatives in a general election.

During the campaign, Carry said he supported dollar retaliatory rates per dollar against the United States and a coordinated strategy to boost investments. He has repeatedly complained that Canada’s growth under Trudeau’s command was not good enough.

The Canadian leader published on his official website a statement comparing Trump’s attitudes to those of a “bully” amid the imposition of commercial tariffs. “We will not stand still while US illegal tariffs damage our workers and their families. As Canadians, we need to face this challenge as a united team, ”Carry said in the statement.

He argued that, in the medium term, if it is no longer possible to “count on American neighbors,” Canada must diversify their business relationships.

The new leader of the Liberal Party is expected to convene the election quickly. The deadline for the new election is October 20 this year. However, opponents may require the process to be performed before.
