A PT race for new affiliates has been generating internal questioning and suspected artificial swelling.
The deadline for being part of the electoral college ended on February 28, with a balance of 341,315 new affiliates, or an increase of 13%. There are now 2.94 million registered petistas.
Almost 10,000 of these new affiliations, however, have been contested internally in several municipalities. The number should rise to the deadline for challenge requests on March 15.
The decision on validating or not these affiliations is up to the state directories, with possible appeal to the National Directory.
One of those who have expressed the criticism is. He points out suspicious growth in affiliates in several cities, including places where the PT recorded weak election results last year and has little political strength.

In some cities, there was an explosion in the proportion of affiliates. The record holder is Pedra Branca (CE), with growth of 298%. Other expressive jumps occurred in Viseu-PA (277%), Icó-CE (270%), Maceió (160%) and Maricá-RJ (111%).

New party’s new president, Senator Humberto Costa (PE) states that the number of affiliations and challenges is “within the reasonable”, and that the PT has instances to investigate all cases.
“Questions can be asked normally, and the party will analyze the cases object of challenge. It is important to remember that there is no collective challenge, each case has to be justified,” says Costa. According to him, about 30% of the affiliations questioned so far are in Alagoas.
“There are cases where the party received a lot of affiliates in a city because it won the mayor election last year, so this became an attractive,” he says.
The senator also says that reducing the period of affiliation to six months for new members to vote was a way to adapt the internal rules to electoral legislation. This is the period required so that new affiliates can apply in a claim.
