According to an international observatory, more than 1,000 people have died in clashes in the country since the installation of the new regime

Ahmad Al-Sharaa’s office, Acting President of Syria, said on Sunday (9.mar.2025) that the government will form an independent committee to investigate deaths in confrontations between supporters of the new regime and loyal forces to former President Bashar Al-Assad. The information is from Reuters.

“We announce the formation of a committee to investigate events on the events on the coast and formed a superior commission”said Al-Sharaa. According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, more than 1,000 people have already died in the clashes between supporters of former President Bashar Al-Assad and the security forces of the country’s new regime.

Al-Sharaa’s declaration takes place on the same day that the United States and Russia to the UN Security Council (United Nations) a meeting to discuss the escalation of violence in Syria. The meeting is scheduled for Monday (10.mar).

The commission also complies with a request from the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk. In a statement, Turk called for immediate fire in the coastal region where conflicts are concentrated and where there are records that Syrian state forces have been in charge of executions.

“There are reports of sectarian summary executions by unidentified perpetrators, by members of the security forces of the Interin Authorities, as well as elements associated with the former government.”these turk.

The deaths in Syria also have an ethnic character. According to Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a significant number of deaths is from Alauites-ethnic-religious group to which former President Bashar al-Assad belongs and represents about 10% of the Syrian population.

The community has the core located in the coastal provinces of Latakia and Tartus. The clashes broke out after the Alauites launched an attack on the security forces in Jableh, Latakia. The attack has resulted in the largest wave of violence in the country since the Fall of Assad in December 2024.

The interim president of the country did not say who will be part of the independent committee that will verify the facts about the confrontations in the region where the population of Alauita concentrates.

The government of Assad, which had been in power for 24 years, fell on December 8, 2024, when rebels from the HTS (Hayat Tahrir al-Sham) group took the capital Damascus. The HTS is the successor of the Al-Nusra Front, founded in 2011 as a group affiliated with al Qaeda of Iraq and with jihadist ideology.
