In a video published on social networks this Sunday (9), the governor of São Paulo, Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans), said that his management is “doing his homework” to ensure cheaper food on the São Paulo table. He pointed out that since the beginning of his management ICMS in the state has been zero for essential items of everyday life, such as rice, beans, eggs, flour, vegetables and vegetables.
“Here in Sao Paulo, we are doing our homework since the beginning of management when it comes to cheaper food on the table. It is not today that ICMS in the state is zero for everyday items, ”said the governor, seen as one.
The statement was a response to the request made by President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (PT), who asked the states to zero the. This measure is part of the Federal Government’s strategy to try to contain the increase in food prices in the country.
Last Thursday (6), during the announcement of exemption from import rates for products such as meat, coffee, sunflower oil, corn, palm oil, sardines and sugar, vice president Geraldo Alckmin (PSB-SP) appealed to states to adopt the same measure where ICMS is incidence.
Lula also mentioned the need for “drastic measures” if prices are not reduced, although it has not specified what these measures could be.
However, the federal government’s request was not well received by many governors, who compared the proposal with the reduction of ICMS promoted during the Jair Bolsonaro (PL) government to try to reduce fuel prices in the election year. They argue that Lula and Alckmin should have called the governors to a meeting before trying to transfer the problem to states.

Before, other governors had already manifested. The governor of Paraná, Ratinho Jr. (PSD), published a video showing Alckmin’s announcement interrupted by a sign saying, “Just now? In Paraná there is a basic basket without tax for a long time! ”.
In Rio Grande do Sul, Governor Eduardo Leite (PSDB) also used social networks to highlight that ICMS on basic basket products is already reset in the state for families “who need it most”.
In his video, Tarcisio took the opportunity to criticize the Federal Government’s approach and emphasized the importance of fiscal responsibility.

“What promotes social justice is fiscal responsibility, it is the careful look of management, it is difficult decision making when necessary for the good of all,” said the Paulista Governor.
