The dreaded pine caterpillar is back: learn how to avoid risks and protect yourself

With the arrival of the hottest time, the lines of the pine caterpillar begin to emerge (Thaumetopoea pityocampa), a common phenomenon in Mediterranean forests, but continues to cause concern among populations and pet owners.

In addition to the damage they can cause to trees, these caterpillars represent a real danger to human and animal health due to their hives, capable of causing serious allergic reactions.

The biological cycle of the pine caterpillar

These caterpillars have a complex life cycle, as explained by. During the summer, adult butterflies lay the eggs on the pine needles.

The larvae emerge between September and October and spend winter in silk nests in the trees.

With increasing temperatures, they begin to descend in Indian line to the ground, where they bury and move to the chrysalis phase, giving rise to future butterflies.

Although caterpillars can defoliate the pines, they rarely kill them, as they do not consume the younger shoots, allowing the trees to regenerate in the spring.

The risks for humans and animals

The main dangers of the pine caterpillar come from their urticants, which are released as a defense mechanism and can cause serious allergic reactions. The most common symptoms include:

-Skin redemption: Skin irritation with itching, burning, redness and swelling;

-Respiratory Problems: Hair inhalation can cause cough, breathing difficulties and, in extreme cases, anaphylactic shock;

-Ocular Written: Symptoms similar to conjunctivitis, such as reddish eyes, itching and swelling.

In animals, especially in dogs, contact with caterpillars can be extremely dangerous and can lead to language necrosis and other serious complications.
