After attacks in the Northwest, UN calls for immediate cessation of civilian death and highlights the urgency of investigations
The (United Nations) requested, on Sunday (9.mar.2025), the immediate end of the death of civilians in Syria. The warning was later issued a series of attacks that began on Thursday (6.mar), with reports of extreme violence and deaths of whole families in the northwest of the country. The information is from the agency Lusa.
The clashes began with an offensive in Jablé near Latakia by supporters of the deposed President Bashar Al-Assad. Latakia, a stronghold of the government and the Alauíta community, which belongs to the Assad clan, has become a scenario of unprecedented violence. In response, the Syrian government mobilized to combat the former president’s supporters.
The OSDH (Human Rights Observatory) reported the death of 745 Alauitian civilians in the coastal regions and the mountains of Latakia since the beginning of the clashes. In addition, 273 members of the Pro-Assad security forces and combatants were killed. Reports indicate the occurrence of sectarian executions.
Ahmad al-Chareh, leader of the Islamic Radical Sunni group HTS (Hayat Tahrir al-Sham), appealed to national unity and civil peace. Al-Chareh, who led the rebel faction coalition responsible for the fall of Assad and fled to Moscow with his family, highlighted the importance of overcoming internal divisions to restore stability in the country.
Volker Turk, UN-Human Human Rights, emphasized the need for quick, transparent and impartial investigations into murders and other violations. “The murder of civilians in the coastal areas of northwestern Syria should cease immediately”these turk.
“Following a series of coordinated attacks, allegedly launched by members of the former government and other local gunmen, we are receiving extremely worrying reports from whole families, including women and children (…) who were killed”he added.
