The threat of tariff has increased imports from China by 7.9 %, but the commercial war with China and other partners can cause a decrease in volume in the coming months.

The import of goods containers to the US reached an almost record level in February. The threat of the introduction of duties has contributed to this. TASR reports this based on the Reuters report.

The volume of imported goods by containers to the US increased by 4.7 %year -on -year in February 2025, said on Monday, Descartes, which provides technology to the supply chain. She pointed out that in the coming months it could fall as a result of the US trade war with China and other key partners.

Efforts to avoid duties

In February, US naval ports were equipped with more than 2.2 million TEU containers (Twenty Foot Equivalent Unit, twenty -hundred equivalent units), the second largest recorded in February volume powered by an increase in supply of 7.9 %, Descartes said.

Thus, the strong volume of imports into the US continued in the first two months of 2025, powered by durable consumer expenses and an effort to supply themselves before the expected introduction of tariffs on goods from China, Mexico and Canada.

Customs for China have a significant impact on maritime transport, as most of these goods come to the US on ships. Goods from Mexico and Canada are usually imported by trucks or trains.

Doubling the customs

US President Donald Trump in February imposed a duties of 10 % on Chinese goods and doubled them to 20 % this month. These tariffs supplement 25 % duties imposed on Chinese imports during the first term of office.

China has introduced retaliatory duties of 10 % to 15 % to a certain import from the US from 10 March. It also raised complaints about US duties at the World Trade Organization.

Meanwhile, Trump plans to continue the commercial war with countries around the world. In a speech in Congress last week, he said that on April 2, there would be other duties, including “reciprocal duties” and poor measures aimed at balancing long -term imbalances in the trade.
